Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information Weather Then (“we,” “us”) collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. We designed the app to work without an account and without collecting names, email addresses, or other direct identifiers.
Information we collect
Location. If you allow location access, or if you manually enter or save a place, we use that location to fetch forecasts and nearby historical station data. Saved places are stored on your device. When the app requests weather or climate information, location coordinates (and related place labels you chose) are sent to our servers and to weather data providers as needed to fulfill the request.
Device and app information. We may collect technical details such as device type or model, operating system version, app version, language, and time zone. This helps us understand how the app performs and which platforms to support.
Usage information. We collect anonymous product analytics about how the app is used — for example, which screens or features are opened, which chart types are viewed, period tools or place comparisons, the public climate station identifiers used for a session, the country of a place you selected (not a continuous GPS trail), approximate session timing, and whether weather or history network requests succeed or fail (including HTTP status and endpoint name). This is for product improvement, not for identifying you personally. Analytics events intentionally omit latitude and longitude.
Install identifier. The app generates a random install ID stored on your device. We may send it with API requests for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and aggregated analytics (including as the analytics distinct identifier). It is not your name or Apple/Google account ID, and we do not use it to build a personal profile about you.
Information we do not collect
We do not require you to create an account. We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number, or payment details inside the app (purchases, if any, are handled by Apple or Google). We do not intentionally collect precise personal identity information, and we do not sell your personal information.
How we use information
Provide forecasts, historical comparisons, and climate views for the places you select.
Operate, secure, and improve the app and our related services — including debugging, performance, understanding aggregate feature usage, popular climate stations, and failure rates of network requests.
Enforce reasonable use limits and protect against abuse of our APIs.
Comply with law when we are legally required to do so.
Third-party services
Forecast data is obtained through Open-Meteo and the weather models it distributes. Historical daily observations come from NOAA’s GHCN-Daily archive via our servers. When you look up weather for a place, those providers (and our infrastructure that talks to them) receive the location information needed to return results.
We use PostHog to process product analytics on our behalf — including install ID, usage and feature events, public climate station identifiers, country of selected places, and network error signals. PostHog processes this data under agreements that limit use to providing services to us. Coordinates used to fetch weather are not sent to PostHog in analytics events.
On this website (weather-then.com), we use PostHog for anonymous site analytics such as page views, approximate unique visitors, referrer and campaign source (when present), and basic device/browser information. We do not require an account to browse the site.
We may use other analytics or infrastructure providers that process device, usage, and location-related data on our behalf under similar limits. We will update this policy if we add additional named vendors that require disclosure.
Data retention
Information stored on your device (such as saved places and settings) remains until you delete it or remove the app. Server logs and analytics are kept only as long as reasonably needed for operations, security, and product analysis, then deleted or aggregated.
Your choices
You can deny or later revoke location permission in your device settings. Without location, you can still use the app by entering places manually.
You can delete saved places in the app. Uninstalling the app removes data stored locally on that device.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to or deletion of personal information we hold. Contact us using the details below. Because we minimize identifiers, we may need enough information to locate relevant records, and some anonymous analytics cannot be tied back to you.
Children
Weather Then is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
International users
We may process information in the United States or other countries where we or our service providers operate. Those places may have different data-protection laws than your home country.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version in the app (and on our website when available) and revise the effective date. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
